How much would it cost to get a ruby ring reset?

Sophie asked:

I have a ring with a 3x5mm ruby set in 14k yellow gold. I don't like the style of the band, and I don't wear yellow gold. I'm thinking about getting it reset into a white gold band, and maybe adding two tiny diamonds from a pair of earrings that I don't wear very often. I think it would make a much nicer ring, but what would the price range for this be?

My dad stole my 200 year old ruby?

ok, my great-grandmother gave me a ruby ring (my birthstone) for my high school graduation last year. It was over 200 years old and i was only the 4th person to ever have possession of it. It is a beautiful dark red ruby, completely original since synthetic rubies were not commercialized until the 20th century. Well, because it was so old, the prongs had worn way far down, and because i wear it every day i was afraid the stone would fall out. So my dad took it to a jeweler that he "trusts" and they had to completely replace the head of the ring. Anyways, when I got the ring back i noticed something was not right. I thought at first it was just because they cleaned it. Then I finally took it to MY jeweler and they informed me it was synthetic. I realized the stone was a completely different cut! Mine was cut more like a diamond (almost cone-shaped on the bottom) and this one was completely flat across the bottom. also it is a different color! How do I get my 200 year old heirloom back??
all i wanna know is how i should legally go about getting my stone back. I'm pretty sure my dad took it and not the jewelers. he wouldn't let me take it to them and demand what happened. then he came up with a bogus story about going to an expert and finding out that it really was my ruby (even though this person had never seen MY ruby, just the one it was replaced with) and how the market is too bad and if somebody was going to take it it wouldn't do them any good. I am just really hurt and wish I knew what to do. Any help would be amazing! thank you so much!
the only problem with calling the police is that I have no pictures or appraisals of the original. I showed my great grandma however and she agreed with me that it was not the same. I am just scared that if I involve the authorities that they are going to think that I'm making it up because there is no proof, just the word of me and my family (NOT my dad)
