Web Site Development With Ruby On Rails And Other Programs

Web site development is a very big business these days. Almost every company in the world is trying to make their make on the web. However creating a nice looking, functional web site is not very easy to achieve unless you have the right tools to help you.

The need for web development tools has led many different companies to produce very sophisticated programs to help programmers and even non-programmers create and deploy great looking and very functional web sites. Some of the tools available for people to use for web development are Macromedia's Dreamweaver, Microsoft's Front Page, Microsoft's Visual Studio, and Ruby on Rails.

The first two programs are used mostly to design and create visually attractive web sites, but they do not offer great database support. However the last two programs are fully developed web frameworks that allow programmers to create a fully functional web site using one program. Ruby on Rails is the only one of these programs that offers a full version that does not cost a thing. The best thing about Ruby on Rails is that it is open source, so it is constantly being worked on and improved by programmers to make it much better and much easier to use.

Also creating web sites with Visual Studio only allows you to use some of its functions if you deploy on a Windows server, while Ruby on Rails is more tailored to run on a Linux or Unix environment. Ruby on Rails is the only open source web development framework that can offer some of the same functionality that can be found in many of the more expensive software that is available.

Ruby on Rails also allows more agile development than PHP or some other technologies that are available right now. I believe that everyone should look into Ruby on Rails if they do not have a large development budget or they need to rapidly develop a robust web application.

Ruby on Rails is Simplicity Itself. or not Quite?

The never-ending desire for riveting Web sites that “pull eyeballs”, lengthen stay and induce return visits has, since 2004, complicated the life of Web application engineers. Enriching a page with Flash, embedded video, visitor talkback, and self-serve communication channels means developer teams need varied expertise in Ajax, Web services and allied technological tools. Happily, Yukihiro Matsumoto authored the Ruby on Rails language and offered it up as a Web 2.0 framework option with the simple immediacy of PHP and the familiar architecture, clean code and robust quality of Java.

At a briefing I attended earlier this week, a Project Manager at HyTech Professionals out in Nashua (www[.]hytechpro[.]com) raved about the agile development they have managed for hundreds of clients with Ruby on Rails. At the core, he claimed, all a developer really need attend to is a Web server, a database engine and such sparse code it’s unbelievable. This independent software house found it could slash time to market with the speed and ease with which RoR could generate rich, database-driven Web 2.0 projects.

Still, hands-on experience with a solid client base demonstrated two things to bear in mind:

Ruby on Rails is not the silver bullet that sweeps away the complexity of J2EE. Matsumoto never did claim RoR was a comprehensive enterprise IDE. Rather, the platform seems to have worked very well as a leaner replacement for combos like Tomcat and JDBC.

Developers have still endured manual processes and practices. Needless to say, this has meant an active search for a killer app IDE to overlay on RoR. Let me tell you what I turned up in my next post.

Best Affordable Ruby on Rails Hosting: Top 3 ROR Web Hosts

Looking for best affordable web hosting plans including Ruby on Rails? First take a look at some important features which must be considered when choosing your web hosting company:

Reliability and uptime: Hosting uptime refers to the percentage of time the host is accessible via the internet. It is very important your service be uptime (functioning and available for use). It means you can access your account whenever you want to update your web pages, and users can enter your website whenever they refer to your site address. If your hosting service is not uptime it can be catastrophic!

Disk space: Web hosting space is the amount of room that the web host provides to store your HTML, graphic, video/audio and other files. This figure is most commonly stated in gigabytes. If you don't know how much space you need for your website, you can choose a web host with unlimited disk space, which allows you to build as many web pages as you want.

Bandwidth: Bandwidth (or data transfer) refers to the amount of data that is accessed by your visitors. Web hosts define bandwidth as the total amount of data access from your server over a month's time. This figure is most commonly expressed in gigabytes. If you don't know how much bandwidth you need for your website, you can pick a web host with unlimited data transfer, which allows you to support as many visitors as you want.

Ease of Control Panel: It is important that the control panel is easy to use and all information can be accessed easily.

If you are a beginner it is generally hard to you to pick the right web hosting service. There are many websites which display a couple of web hosting companies as the best and leave people confused without being helpful. To make things even more confusing, some hosting companies are cheating and lying to their customers!
