If you have a special lady in your life and are wondering what would make a good birthday gift, you should consider getting her a pair of ruby earrings. The earrings reflect the love you have for her and really convey the message of how much you care. Any woman would love to receive a pair of elegant earrings with rubies in them. You can further enhance her gift by taking her out to dinner so she can show off her new earrings.

The nice part about choosing earrings is that they come in so many different styles and designs. You can find earrings for people who have pierced ears as well as for those who do not. You can also find them with different types of materials used in the design such as silver, gold or platinum. You can also choose from earring styles that are small and delicate or long and elegant. You can also have them accented with other types of gemstones besides the ruby.

A pair of ruby earrings also makes a great Valentine's Day gift. Red has always been the symbol of love and the ruby is the perfect reflection of that symbol. You can even find little heart style earrings that have ruby stones set inside them. You can also find accessory pieces of jewelry to coordinate with the style of earrings you choose. Often you will find earring and necklace sets together that work well as a gift for that special someone in your life.

By: Moataz Kadada

About the Author:

Ruby, one of the most beautiful gemstones that ever existed, invokes the innate feelings of love and passion. 'Ratnaraj' or the king of gems is an appropriate name for this splendid gemstone that has for centuries been the most favorite jewel of royals all over the world.

With time the significance of rubies have in no way deterred. They remain as coveted today as they were centuries back. Besides many of the qualities and healing powers of rubies, it also happens to be the birthstone of all who are born in the month of July. The splendid ruby is said to bring good luck to all July born. So those who enjoy their birthdays in July have an extra reason to don this splendid gemstone.

Being the birthstone for July, Ruby jewelry makes great birthday gifts. Besides being an timeless present, ruby jewelry is sure to win the heart of anybody who receives it as a gift. One can choose between a ruby ring, ruby earrings or a pretty ruby pendant. A classic pair of ruby solitaires would make a great

gift. The choice of shapes is many, from round and pear to trillion and princess. A matching pendant would complete the gift in every possible way. For something more elaborate designs that have dazzling diamonds to complement the radiant red ruby would be more appropriate.

Ruby rings again, look fabulous whether set as simple solitaires or in the company of glittering diamonds. The ring could vary from trendy ruby band rings and ruby and diamond eternity bands to more elaborate ruby and diamond antique or cocktail rings.

Ruby being the birthstone for July gives an added reason to sport this fabulous gemstone in any form of jewelry. However, for those who don't enjoy their birthdays in July, there is no reason for disappointment. Rubies are meant as much for you as for all July born, so wear this beautiful gemstone as much as you like.

By: Ruby Angara

About the Author:

If you're still young enough to remember your birthday, you probably also remember the special birthstone assigned to it. But at your age, we bet you don't really know the SIGNIFICANCE of your birthstone and what power the ancients felt would be bestowed about you by wearing it.

July's Birthstone: Ruby
Birthstone Properties: Fire and emotion
Alternative Birthstone: Sapphire

Ruby is the birthstone for July and also the anniversary gemstone for the 15th and 40th years of marriage. The history of ruby mining dates back more than 2,500 years ago, and today the coveted gemstone is found in Burma, Thailand, Kenya, Tanzania, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Cambodia, Kenya, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the United States.

Called the "Lord of Gems" by ancient Hindus, rubies are one of the most highly prized gems throughout history. The fiery glow of rubies is said to come from the gemstone's internal and eternal flame.

For this reason, the gift of a ruby is a symbol of everlasting love. If worn on the left hand, ancient lore has it that the Ruby will bring good fortune. It is a perfect engagement ring gemstone and a popular alternative to or addition to diamond engagement bands.

Hard, but Soft
The word ruby comes from the Latin "ruber," meaning red. It is a variety of the mineral Corundum that is called sapphire when it is any color except red...only when it is red does it earn the designation of "ruby."

But that's not to say that there's only one "red" for rubies. Rubies range in hue from an orangey red to a purplish red, although the most treasured rubies are still true red in color.

The ruby is a very durable gemstone, surpassed in hardness only by diamonds. But despite its hard nature, it has a soft side. According to legend, you should never make faces at a ruby in a museum or ignore it because it will grow dull if slighted or not worn or seen.

Deliver Me From Evil
Royalty chose rubies as a powerful talisman that could help protect them against evil by anticipating its arrival. Monarchs thought that rubies would darken when peril was danger, and then return to its original color once the threat was past.

In an interesting way, rubies had their own built-in anti-theft device: it was believed that in order for rubies to act for good, it was believed that they had to be in the hands of their rightful owner.

A Ruby By Any Other Name
Gemstones that are not rubies are also called rubies. The Balas Ruby is a type of spinel (a hard glassy mineral). Bohemian Rubies are derived from rose quartz, and Siberian "rubies" are really red or pink tourmaline. In the United States, the American, Cape, Montana, and Rocky Mountain "rubies" are really different varieties of garnet.

By: Sam Serio

About the Author:

The birthstone for the month of July is the ruby. It belongs to the Corundum family of gemstones, which also includes sapphires. The coloring of the ruby can range from an almost pink to deep, blood red. However, the deeper and darker the color of the ruby is, the more desirable it is considered to be. Most rubies have a small amount of inclusions in the stone. These inclusions can be removed through heat treating processes, but there are many individuals who enjoy the fluorescent quality that these inclusions provide the stone. During the Middle Ages, the ruby was thought to guard an individual against evil thoughts, lust, and discord. It was also thought to bring good health to the wearer and to cure one of bleeding disorders.

When it comes to gifts for women, the ruby is almost exclusively featured in jewelry, due to the rarity of quality gems. Rubies that are set in earrings are almost always featured as a solitaire stone. In necklaces, the ruby is also often featured as a single pendant; however, the design of the jewelry may also feature diamonds, which are a common accent stone for rubies. Small rubies may be featured in rings. However, rubies that have a large carat size can become somewhat fragile when they placed into a ring setting. Most pieces of jewelry feature rubies placed in settings of white gold, titanium, and platinum. The silver appearance of these precious metals is thought, by most jewelers, to be the best materials for showcasing a ruby's brilliance. Although, it is possible for an individual to find ruby jewelry that is set in gold.

The term "ruby" is often used to describe the red coloring that an object possesses. An individual might hear of a vase or other item described as "ruby". However, as aforementioned, the rarity of rubies often prevents it from being used as a decorative feature for simple items. Because it is so expensive, rubies do not make ideal presents for small children. For a more exotic gift idea, a couple could take a trip together to on of the only ruby mines located in the United States in Cherokee, North Carolina. Open to the public seven days a week, the mine allows individuals to undertake their own, unique gem hunting experience.

By: Blair Cooper

About the Author:

I've recently come into about 10,000 carats of uncut gems and I'm trying to figure out how to get the most out of them. The info I've come across so far tells me to clean and tumble them first and then inspect them for value but I'm not sure if this is the right start and even if it is how do I know which stones will be best to send to a Gem cutter so that I'm not just wasting my time. Any idea's would be appreciative.

By: friggenni

About the Author:
