Who wants to try and solve some ancient India algebra problems?

Out of a swarm of bees 1/5 settled in a field, 1/3 settled on a stone. 3 times the difference of those numbers flew to the bloom of a Kataja flower. one bee which remained hovered in the air, tell me the number of bees.

8 rubies, 10 emeralds and 100 pearls are in a set of earrings. The sum of the prices of the 3 sorts of gems were 3 less then half a hundred. Tell me the price of each gem.

Good Luck! First person to write out the equations and get both questions right get best answer!

  1. Tim M says:

    2012 Obama

    x/5 + x/3 + 3(x/3-x/5) + 1 = x

    3x + 5x + 3(5x-3x)+15 = 15x
    8x + 3(2x) + 15 = 15x
    14x + 15 = 15x
    x = 15

    Not sure I understand the second one, though.

    [3(1/3 - 1/5) + 1/3 + 1/5]x + 1 = x, where x is the swarm of bees
    [3(5/15 - 3/15) + 5/15 + 3/15]x + 1 = x
    [3(2/15) + 8/15]x + 1 = x
    [6/15 + 8/15]x + 1 = x
    14/15 x + 1 = x
    x(1 – 14/15) = 1
    x(1/15) = 1
    x = 15

    15 bees in the swarm
    3 settled in a field
    5 settled on a stone
    3(5 – 3) = 3(2) = 6 fleew to the Kataja flower
    the last one remained in the air
