Is my Ruby Barb Pregnant?

I got 2 Ruby Barbs just this morning from a garden centre that specialize is fish. The are both very healthy and look like a ruby garp should. I took them home, placed the bag in the tank, and then released them into the water. I have a 2 or 3 Gallon Tank (I'm not sure) with a Golden Sucking Loach and a gold fish, and of course the 2 new Ruby Barbs. I have a small ornament bridge and an ormament of a walrus. I have 1 plastic plant and a live plant. I have a thick layer of gravel at the bottom and the tank is a bit dirty because i cant clean it out with my sucking loach. I also have a filter. Anyway, I got a male and a female and they are called John and Nettie. I am wondering if Nettie is pregnent. She and John are constantly round the live plant and they are always beside each other. Nettie has a greyish area on her stumoch close to her tail. Is she pregnent, is she is, is her habitat suitable for her and if you can some tips for me? I have never bred fish in my life. I dont mind getting a new tank or anything, anything to keep her healthy, and I am 13 by the way. I need help, thanks in advance

You really need to clean your gravel. Even though you have a filter, it can’t clean out your gravel. Your gravel contains the majority of the fish waste and uneaten food which is polluting the water. You won’t hurt your loach if you vacuum the gravel. (you are helping it). Ruby barbs don’t give birth to live young. The female fills up with eggs and then she releases them over plants for the male fish to fertilize. They need a good bit of space to do this. In a small tank I don’t think this would happen and the male would just keep harassing her. I would recommend just taking all of your fish and their water and put them in a ten gallon aquarium.

If she does release eggs you probably will never see them They will with out a dought get eaten by all the other fish and the parents. Usually when breeding Bards of any kind larger marbles are placed on the bottom of the tank so the eggs will fall down between them and that way the parents can’t get to them. Then when the spawning is done the parents are taken out of the tank. If you really want to breed them you can set up a breeding tank for them. When the eggs hatch you will have to make sure you have live brine shrimp or some kind of fry food to feed them after about 24 to 48 hours of hatching. Good luck.
